Visitability Means:

- One zero step entrance on an accessible path of travel from the street, sidewalk or driveway

- Doorways that provide 32 inches clear space throughout the home's main floor and hallways that provide 36 inches of clear width

- Basic access to a half or (preferably) full bath on the main floor

Accessible Routes Can Be Unique and Beautiful

A sidewalk curves past garden shrubbery and leads to the zero-step entrance door of a tan and yellow-brick house. A woman with blue jeans, a grey top and sunglasses briskly walks along the accessible sidewalk leading from the home. A woman with blue jeans, a grey top and sunglasses is photographed mid-stride walking even farther away from the entrance to the home. A curb is cut out to make a zero-step wheelchair accessible path leading toward a home. The path's edges are lined with rocks and decorative tree-branches.

Accessible pathways to a home can be beautiful. They may also need creative solutions to be accomplished.

One pathway of this home required a curb to be partially removed to get the pathway flush with the street. The removed portion of the curb was repurposed to be a feature in a garden.

Shallow inclines that are usuable by wheelchairs also provide convenience for other tasks. A gorgeous ramp providing access to a deck is also handy when moving a wheelbarrow for yard work.
